Today we lost a legend: RIP Etta James

January 20, 2012 § Leave a comment

Easily, one of the most influential women in music.

If you don’t think you know who she is, Wikipedia that shit! I guarantee you have heard her wonderful voice before or at least heard the countless re-makes of her songs by modern artists such as Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and Adele. Etta James is best know for having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll.
Her voice will stay with me forever. From my childhood days of listening to her voice radiating from the record player and filling our house with her amazing sounds to the entire section of my MP3s with her name on it. You have changed our world of the better Etta James…thank you for bringing us all such wonderful music.

A commencement & A Conclusion

I have been getting many an email and text message lately asking me if the rumor is true….yes, it is.

Saba and I hanging under my desk at nemo

After a long and interesting 6 years with studio nemo here is PDX, it is time for Kari Rowe Photography to hit the road and begin a genesis of its own. At the moment, the winds of change are blowing a whirlwind of stress dreams, TMJ flare ups and mini panic attacks as I begin the painful process of sifting through 8 years of work, and compile a real portfolio. Alas, I will miss thee grimy hangouts, dirty boys, black outs, dance offs, rain soaked afternoon plans, perverse jokes, good coffee, group bike rides, motorcycle crashes, physical abuse and all around good time that has been my life here in Oregon.

Hopefully, when the winds of change calm a bit i will find myself nestled safely in Silverlake with camera in hand, creativity a blaze and dog in tow. I have another month here in the great dreariness of Oregon…so send me a message or give me a f^$&!*@ phone call so we can make sure to have some amazing times before I head towards the sun and big city.

Here is a sweet end of the year recap of a pretty typical year here at nemo hq:

Until I hit the road…during which time i hope to thoroughly document my travels, I would like to thank you all for your patience while my blog postings will be lacking.

SPOIL: Help protect the spirit bear!

January 16, 2012 § 1 Comment

SPOIL is a documentary of the fight to save the Great Bear Rain forest, a location where the wild land meets the wild ocean. On of the only locations left like it that exists in the world today. The spirit bear is only found in these parts! To think that oil giant Enbridge is planning to build a pipeline through it makes me nauseous. Seriously we love our cars and all that jazz but to think that something as amazing as this rain forest would be destroyed and a rares species of beautiful wildlife endangered, well, its really unthinkable!

Watch the trailer for SPOIL and learn more about the situation. Then check out the International League of Conservation Photographers.

Is this for real?

The U.S. Senate is considering the unthinkable: changing detention laws to imprison people — including Americans living in the United States itself — indefinitely and without charge.

The Defense Authorization bill — a “must-pass” piece of legislation — is headed to the Senate floor with troubling provisions that would give the President — and all future presidents — the authority to indefinitely imprison people, without charge or trial, both abroad and inside the United States.

You can sign the petition to urge the senators to oppose indefinite military detention here.

If enacted, sections 1031 and 1032 of the NDAA would:

1)  Explicitly authorize the federal government to indefinitely imprison without charge or trial American citizens and others picked up inside and outside the United States;

(2)  Mandate military detention of some civilians who would otherwise be outside of military control, including civilians picked up within the United States itself; and

(3)  Transfer to the Department of Defense core prosecutorial, investigative, law enforcement, penal, and custodial authority and responsibility now held by the Department of Justice.

What is our world coming to?!

Can the camera lens make you more beautiful?

November 11, 2011 § Leave a comment

Well, I guess that really depends on your perception of beauty. However, no matter what you see as beautiful, there is a lens for you. This awesome article titled “The camera DOES lie: Proof that a lens can be the difference between pretty and pretty ugly” by the daily mail reporter is a tell all of the lies of the lens.

My Mom Tells Rocktails….

July 8, 2011 § Leave a comment

I took these shots of my beautiful mom at her home outside of Taos New Mexico, she owns and runs a coffee shop in Taos called Coffee Cats, if you are in town and in need of a drink check them out. If you do happen in, ask her about her original “Rocktails” its a pretty amazing concept. Her Rock Tails have been written up in all the local busniess journals, blogs and magazines as well as the New York Times Business Journal!

“Natural stones have an energy, which is why many people love this new concept I originated of combining the healing properties of stones with their drinks, which I call ‘Rocktails,’” says Coffee Cats owner Kit Johnston.

She challenged skeptics to blind taste tests, “splitting a cup of coffee into two different cups, and people are dumbfounded that the flavor of the drink changes with the stones, even though the stones by themselves don’t have a flavor.” Be transformed yourself the next time you’re in Taos.

This amazing woman taught me the ins and outs of making art through a camera, the power of positive thoughts, belief in one’s self and the strength given by the earth itself.

Next time you find yourself in New Mexico stop by, say Kari sent you, and try a Rocktail!
